182 NOVA ISTRA Literary, Art and Cultural Journal Zeitschrift für Literatur, Kunst und Kultur Rivista di letteratura, arte e cultura Pula, Croatia / Kroatien / Croazia, No. 4/2024 Summary The new fiction section features contemporary prose and poetry by Croatian authors from various generations, each embracing different poetic approaches. The central section of this issue presents essays and studies on the literary historian and scholar Josip Bratulić (1939), a prominent figure who focused extensively on older Croatian literature, with particular attention to the Glagolitic script and the broader Glagolitic phenomenon in literacy, literature, and culture. A native of Istria, Bratulić served as the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb and as the president of Matica hrvatska (Matrix Croatica). Next, we offer a translation of selected poems by the Italian and Croatian sculptor, painter and writer Simone Mocenni, who divides his time between Milan and Pula. This selection serves as a preview of his upcoming bilingual poetry collection. The following topic, closely tied to the local region, includes a commemorative piece on the linguist Josip Ribarić (1880–1954), born in Istria, who was particularly focused on dialectology and the Chakavian dialect of the Croatian language. This text marks the 70th anniversary of his death. In the same section, we also provide an overview of Croatian education in Istria from the mid-19th century to 1918. As usual, the final section offers critical reviews of recent and new publications, this time focusing on Croatian literature, as well as translated works from Italian and American literature. Ed.
