Nova Istra
202 NOVA ISTRA Journal on Literature, Art and Culture Zeitschrift für Literatur, Kunst und Kultur Rivista di letteratura, arte e cultura Pula, Croatia / Kroatien / Croazia, No. 1-2/2020 Summary This double issue has been published to mark two important anniversaries concer- ning the period of communist totalitarianism that was dominant in Croatia, wit- hin Yugoslavia, up to 1990. Its strong influence was specifically evident in the very rigid environment such as the “military/garrison” (so-called JNA) city of Pula and the whole region of Istria. This refers to the written word, among other things, the word written by young authors in particular. The Communist Party committees, those of the so-called Association of Socialist Youth and Association of Commu- nists had and/or tried to have a complete control over each segment of life cour- se, especially among intellectuals, when it comes to their engagement in public and free artistic expression. Some traces of such “spirit”, atmosphere and mentality in the same place although from the other, so-called democratic world, have not com- pletely disappeared so far. Therefore, the current double issue is dedicated to a person of considerable im- portance, who taught the Croatian language and literature and many other subjects in the Grammar School and at the Teacher Training College. Her name is Ljubica Ivezić, Ph.D. (1915-1995). She and her husband Stjepan (1900-1967) launched the literary club and the journal for young readers Istarski borac , which was more or less successful from time to time. The last editorial board, however, was ordered to con- tinue its publication in 1980, which resulted from an injunction. The topics covered here to mark the 40 th anniversary of the defence of her ne- ver published dissertation on discovering young writers and supporting their work, growth and intellectual-creative development, as well as the 40 th anniversary of the trial communists fabricated to punish the last editorial board – “a sentence in the name of people” – which consequently stopped the journal publication and activi- ties in the literary club... I. LJUBICA IVEZIĆ, the grammar school and university teacher, cultural ac- tivist and scholar (Sisak, 17 th February 1915 – Pula, 29 th December 1995), finis- hed the First Female General-Programme Secondary School in Zagreb, where she also graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in 1938 (today the Faculty of Hu- manities and Social Sciences). Upon retirement, in 1980, she defended her disser- tation ‘Discovering and Supporting the Creativity of Learners in the First Langua- ge Classes and Free Activities’. She had been active among the leftists between the two world wars, and also taught at the secondary schools in Subotica and Hrvat-
