Summary

A couple of texts in prose and poetry by established writers of different generations as well as by writers who are less known to the wider public are used to illustrate the contemporary Croatian literature in the current issue.
The traditional manifestation, 9th Pula Essay Days, was held in October, 2011. As it was focused on Leisure, we present the participants’ essays dealing with this phenomenon literarily, philosophically, historically – from both theoretical and practical aspects. They were particularly orientated to the (im)possibility of idling in a traditional sense, today when everything in the entire world is against leisure time that should be the time for exquisite and encouraging creative enjoyment.
The first Croatian translations include texts in prose and poems by writers from different literatures, such as Belgian, French, Australian, Spanish, Italian (in Istria, Croatia)...
There are also two literary essays in this issue. The first one discusses some theoretical-and-literary views of the literal and metaphorical term of town building (as a symbol for engaged creation) in the history of civilization, in the Biblical context but also that of literature, using one Croatian author as an example. Another one tackles a personal experience of studying and writing haiku poetry, seen in the context of Western tradition instead of Japanese one.
Contributions on the native region, among other things, include a very intriguing study on fojbe (the Karst excavations) as the places of summary executions in Istria during the Second World War. This has been presented in Croatian for the first time. The second contribution we particularly emphasise refers to the Italian actress, Alida Valli, born in Pula, whose life was interesting and career successful but also contradictory because of her relationship with the Italian fascism.
The last section presents a number of reviews considering the new editions signed by national and international authors in the field of literature, history, translation, literary comparative studies, etc.
