SUMMARY

At the very beginning, this double issue is dedicated to the two contemporary Croatian poets that have recently died – Dragutin Tadijanović and Boris Maruna.

The section From Contemporary Literature includes the newly-released fiction and poetry by authors from Croatia and Bosnia-and-Herzegovina.

This issue presents, due to the exchange of texts and bigger sections we occasionally practice in our journal, the section On Love – literary, cultural, scientific and other texts (translated from Italian into Croatian) – that we took over from the literary journal ”La Battana” (Rijeka). This is the only periodical edition of this kind published in Italian here in Croatia, primarily targeted at the Italian minority readers but also to a wider audience in this border-area of Europe. Besides, the above-mentioned journal presents, due to the same exchange, the section City – Essay(translated from Italian into Croatian) that is published in “Nova istra”. At some time this also used to be the central topic of the Pula Essay Days, the international event that has been organised by our journal in October since 2003.

The usual section New Translations includes the short grotesque by Witold Gombrowitz translated from Polish – The Well – and the two stories by the intriguing Austrian author Gustav Meyrink (1868 - 1932).

In addition, Study and Essay consists of a very comprehensive text on Meyrink's spiritual development.

The following sections are Croatian Language and Contributions on Homeland, this time being focused on some Croatian dialectal issues and the native sacral heritage (a collection of relics of almost 300 saints, kept in the Parish Church of Vodnjan, a small town near Pula, that may be interesting in the wider world context, as well).

The reviews in this issue mainly refer to some new Croatian translations of works by: Milan Kundera, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Sándor Márai, Imre Kertész, Viktor Jerofejev, Karl Jaspers…
